It's easier than you think! Homesteader and bone broth aficionado, Mara Watts, shares how to make your own stash of comforting, immune-supportive bone broth for the cold months ahead + creative ways to use it.* In our home, we take the saying “let thy food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be thy food” pretty seriously. With young children running around, there’s some give in there, but for the most part, we strive to use foods that support our bodies in both sickness and in health. A few must-haves to have on hand, especially during sick season, include [homemade elderberry syrup](https://rethinkrural.raydientrural.com/blog/how-to-make-elderberry-syrup-from-dried-berries), [herbal tinctures](https://rethinkrural.raydientrural.com/blog/5-medicinal-herbs-you-can-plant-once-and-harvest-for-years-to-come) for specific ailments, and slow-simmered beef or chicken bone broth. Each has its place in a natural medicine cabinet, but bone broth is non-negotiable. Every year, I spend a few weekends leading up to the cooler months of fall and winter making and canning bone broth to ensure we’re well stocked for when illness strikes. But why bone broth specifically? I’m glad you asked! Bone broth is a nutrient-dense culinary liquid made by simmering animal bones (usually beef, chicken or fish), vegetables, vinegar and spices in a large pot of water. People make and consume bone broth for its health benefits, and use it to make soups or stews. ### What’s the difference between stock, broth and bone broth? You might have seen different variations of stocks and broths in the grocery store. But which one should you choose? And does it really matter if you’re sipping stock versus bone broth? The answer is, “it depends!”... on how you plan to use the stock, broth or bone broth. And what you hope to get out of consuming it. The primary difference between the three is the length of time they are simmered: - **Broth is made by simmering meat, bones, and/or vegetables in water for a short time, usually an hour or two**. Broth is most often found on grocery store shelves and is commonly called for in soup and stew recipes. - **Stock is made by simmering animal bones (and may include vegetables) for around 5 or 6 hours**. Stock adds flavor to casseroles, soups and stews. - **Bone broth is made by simmering animal bones, vegetables and spices together for a much longer time – anywhere from 12 to 48 hours.** These longer simmering times of animal bones and connective tissue draw out nutrients, collagen and minerals that are highly beneficial to the body. People sip bone broth medicinally or use it in soups, stews, casseroles and more. All in all, the type of broth or stock you choose to purchase or make depends on your dietary preferences and how you plan to use it. ![shutterstock\_537768685](https://rethinkrural.raydientrural.com/hs-fs/hubfs/shutterstock_537768685.jpg?width=1101&height=734&name=shutterstock_537768685.jpg) ## The Many Benefits of Homemade Bone Broth There are so many benefits to making and consuming homemade bone broth. One of the main reasons why I enjoy making bone broth is that it’s a great way to reduce unnecessary waste. If our family is already consuming a whole baked chicken for dinner, I’ll plan to save the bones, skin and uneaten meat for simmering into bone broth. It’s a great way to use up the whole carcass and reduce waste. Making your own bone broth also saves you money! By making a large pot of broth, you’re cutting down on your grocery bill. No need to grab a can at the store if you’re already stocked up at home. And probably the biggest benefit of making homemade bone broth – whether it’s chicken or beef – is its nutritional benefits. ### Here are just a few proven examples of the health benefits of bone broth: - Bone broth is high in vitamins and minerals, especially protein. Per cup, bone broth provides about 8 to 10 grams of protein, which is critical for maintaining or gaining muscle mass and for overall health. So, if you’re a bodybuilder or an athlete, consider making and sipping a cup of bone broth regularly. \[Source: [Harvard Health Online](https://www.health.harvard.edu/diet-and-nutrition/savoring-the-benefits-of-bone-broth-worth-a-taste)\] - Other minerals found in bone broth include calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. \[Source: [Harvard Health Online](https://www.health.harvard.edu/diet-and-nutrition/savoring-the-benefits-of-bone-broth-worth-a-taste)\] - The [Spine Health Foundation](https://spinehealth.org/benefits-bone-broth-healthy-bones/) also recognizes bone broth as a beneficial addition to a healthy diet. According to the foundation, bone broth “is high in collagen, which is a protein found in bone, cartilage and connective tissue.” Collagen helps maintain strong, healthy bones, reducing the risk of fractures and bone loss. - [A 2025 scientific study looked at how the nutrients found in bone broth fortify the gut barrier in health and disease](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40180691/). Researchers found that the “abundant amino acids and minerals saturated in bone broth” positively impacted intestinal barrier integrity, intestinal permeability and inflammation in those with inflammatory bowel disease. The study also mentions that “bone broth offers a nutrient-dense option for enhancing overall health and may offer an alternative to dietary supplements with claims for enhanced gut health.” Interesting stuff! But the nutritional benefits don’t end there. Bone broth is also great for joint support, thanks to the presence of collagen and gelatin, is an excellent source of electrolytes (high in sodium and potassium), and *may* promote relaxation and improved sleep quality. Needless to say, bone broth is “good for you!” ## How to Make Homemade Bone Broth Making bone broth is fairly simple. It just takes a while to simmer, so planning is important. When I’m making a batch of beef bone broth, I like to set aside a 2-3 day window to simmer the broth on low for at least 24-48 hours. As a busy mom of three, I work this timeline around our weekly schedule, sports, work, etc. Sundays are a great day for canning, so I’ll usually start my broth on a Thursday evening or Friday morning in the slow cooker. Chicken bone broth is slightly different and doesn’t take nearly as long. If I’m making a batch of chicken broth, I’ll cut that simmer time in half to 12-24 hours. ### Here’s a simple homemade bone broth recipe: Ingredients: - 3 or 4 pounds of animal bones (you can use beef, chicken and even fish bones – I prefer chicken or beef) - 1 gallon of water (or however much will fit in your slow cooker) - 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (this helps pull all of the minerals, collagen, etc. out of the bones during the simmering process) - Chopped or chunked vegetables (throw anything you like in the pot, but avoid brassicas. I usually add carrots, celery and onion) - Salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1. Heat the oven to 400℉. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and add the bones. Roast the bones for about 30 minutes or until they are browned. 2. Combine everything in your slow cooker: bones, water, apple cider vinegar, chopped veggies, salt and pepper. Cover. 3. Set the slow cooker to “Low.” Let simmer for 24-48 hours for beef bones, or 12-24 hours for chicken or fish bones. **Note:** If the mixture boils and foam begins to rise, skim the foam off and discard. 4. When the broth is finished, allow it to cool for a few hours. Then, strain the broth through a fine-mesh strainer into clean mason jars or Ziploc bags (depending on how you plan to store it). You can store broth in the fridge for a few days, freeze it in a Ziploc bag or can it for long-term pantry storage – my preferred method. ## ![shutterstock\_2147547841](https://rethinkrural.raydientrural.com/hs-fs/hubfs/shutterstock_2147547841.jpg?width=5760&height=3840&name=shutterstock_2147547841.jpg) ## Delicious Ways to Use Homemade Bone Broth ### Sipping Broth One of the main uses for homemade bone broth in our home is for sipping when illness strikes. Flu, colds and even tummy bugs – I’m serving up a cup of warm bone broth. Bone broth checks the box on so many levels: it’s packed with natural electrolytes to support the body during sickness, is nutrient-dense and packed with minerals that help support a speedy recovery. I’ll grab a pint out of the pantry, crack it open and heat in a small pot on the stove. When it’s warm, the liquid is poured into a mug and served. ### Beef Stew Beef stew is a staple in our household, especially during the fall and winter time. It’s hearty, filling and oh so delicious served up with a slice of homemade cornbread. To make, add beef stew, carrots and potatoes (chunked), bone broth (beef is best, but chicken bone broth works here, too), some garlic and any spices you enjoy to a slow cooker. Cook on low for 6-8 hours. Or, for more tender meat, I like putting everything in the crockpot around 8 pm the night before and slow cooking until we’re ready to serve. ### Chili Another hearty dinner choice that benefits from a jar of bone broth? Chili! To make, brown a pound or two of ground beef. Drain excess fat and oil, then add to a stockpot. Add your bone broth (again, I prefer beef bone broth here, but chicken bone broth works too), kidney beans, black beans, a can of corn, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Cook on low for a few hours and serve up with tortilla chips, shredded cheese and sour cream. Bon appetit! ### Rice For years, we’ve cooked rice in water, and it’s just so bland. One night for dinner, several years ago, I had a box of chicken bone broth leftover in the fridge that needed to be used. I thought, “Hmm… this could potentially give the rice a good chicken-like flavor. I’ll try it.” I substituted water with bone broth, added some butter and salt and my children gobbled it up. From that point on, we only cook rice with broth or bone broth. The rice is flavorful and complements any chicken or beef main dish. ## Give Bone Broth a Try! As you can see, bone broth has many uses in a homesteader’s home and pantry. It is… - A great way to reduce food waste; - Delicious and nutrient-dense; - A healthy way of getting minerals and vitamins in just one cup; - Soothing and comforting when sick; - And a lovely addition to any soup or stew, and even rice!
